About 20 riders started laps at Miller's on Sunday morning at 7 am in support of the 3rd annual M4 ride. We couldn't have asked for better starting conditions. It was calm, cool, and clear as the riders turned on their lights and started winding their way through the trees. Several supports and team riders waited in the parking area where Ruth Holliday from the Bicycle Pedaler has set up a tent and she provided water, energy packs, and lots of enthusiasm. The Oz Club also had a tent set up for their riders and provided encouragement for everyone as they completed their laps.

Only three riders attempted to complete the ride solo. One rider left for a non-ride situation that needed his attention and the other two idiots (including me) completed the ride as dusk fell.

Lap one was marked with the rides first mechanical. I jump one of the gullies and de-chained my bike. After several attempts to keep the chain on I discovered I had bent a tooth on my Spot chainring. Brent left me to complete his lap and I ran back to the truck and used a crescent wrench to complete a field fix. I caught up with Brent later in the lap. On the second lap Brent wrecked causing bruising and a jacked up hip. He was quoted as saying "fuck!"

He has an injury but when asked if he skipped the ride to avoid a blood doping test he was quoted as saying "suck it!"

The rest of the ride was marked with multiple flats on my part and all together a difficult but wonderful ride.

The shirts were a success. They were designed by Andy Tatum and printed by Prairie Print.

Thanks to all the riders who participated and their family members for the Sunday ride pass to be away from home all day.

See you next year,
Here is a proof for the final TShirt design. Once again, the shirts will be 100% cotton, Gildan Ultra.
Cost is $17 for Short Sleeve and $22 for Long Sleeve. Add $2 for XXL.

The color of the shirt will be a heather blue instead of the black background you see here. The text will be on the back. Complectus Dolor is latin and roughly translates to "Embrace the Suck" I have the minimum order but you can still order one if you want. I will place the order on the 10th of October. Payment is due at that time via Paypal. Email me and I will send you an invoice. bikeidiot@cox.net. She originally wasn't going to come at all. She did and got some good pictures. She didn't get everyone but I'll bet you will see yourself somewhere. To show your appreciation it would be great if you would drop a thank you to her at brie.pringle@gmail.com. I don't know some of your names so please e-mail me at awneos@yahoo.com and I'll make corrections. Enjoy!

About 15 riders showed up at 7am to start the first laps in the dark. By 7:30 dawn had broken the horizon and lights were no longer needed. 5 of us were solo riders and the rest were the first riders for their teams. Two tents were set up and the boys from Coleman teased all of us by cooking hash browns and eggs on a camp stove. Ruth from the Bicycle Pedaler made a surprise visit and left us some chairs, water jugs and energy bars and homemade treats.

The wind started out of the south but rotated to the north as the day progressed. It was sunny and pleasant, especially compared to last year’s 30 mph sustained winds and 40 degree weather. Most of us were in short sleeves by 9am.

Aaron North's fiancé took over 250 photos and I hope to have some posted here soon. At one time there were 40 plus cars in the parking lot as riders not associated with the M4 shared the trail with us. In fact, I saw some cars with bikes on the back slow at the approach to Miller's and drive on past shaking their heads. Two idiots rode without helmets and got an earful from Tim Miller as we passed them. After one lap they left.

Casualties: Brent Dodds wrecked on lap 2 and cracked his helmet. Luckily his head is so hard that the helmet was ornamental to begin with and no lasting damage was sustained to his melon. Aaron Sevrin cracked his fork when passing in high grass and discovering large chucks of hidden concrete. Several other riders encounter the various bleeding legs and other body parts that comes with kissing and hugging trees by accident.

After the ride, the parking lot was clean, with no trash and no sign that an event has been held. Paula Stout wrote a nice article and mentioned the ride. You can find it at: http://www.examiner.com/mountain-biking-in-wichita/100-miles-of-dirt-on-the-ground-how-to-prepare-for-a-dirt-century

All in all I enjoyed the day, if you can call suffering for 10 hours enjoyable.
It didn't absorb as much as the rain as I thought it would. I anticipate the sunny weather this week drying up the trail, but I'll check it on Saturday just to make sure. I'll post here and on Bike Kansas/KSS newsgroups should there be a need to reschedule.

Regardless, I did about 7 hours of trail work over two days to "speed" up the trail. I removed a tree that should have been taken out when the new section was cut. I also removed a stumpy and took some roots out and generally cleaned.

Oh, here are the T-shirt design: They will run $13 for S/S, $16 for XXL and one of you ordered a long sleeve that will also be $16. I hope to have them the day of the ride so I don't have to hunt everyone down. Please bring cash as I would prefer not to have to go to the bank with a bunch of checks. I ordered an extra L and two extra XLs

1. We will be riding the new section. No cutting the trail by riding the west side exposed area.
2. The blanket swag will work this way: Drop a bike related swag item before your team starts riding. Each rider for your team can drop an item. (Participation is optional). Once your entire team has ridden all 21 laps, then you may take one (if you left one).Bike Idiothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04727292337988078970noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964567230834469796.post-10823741306167341682011-09-16T10:21:00.000-07:002011-09-16T10:21:11.442-07:00Sept Update
Thanks to those of you who have signed up for the M4 ride on 16Oct11.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The rules will be the same for 2011:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">1. The ride is 21 laps long, or 100 miles. This is not a race. No time or placing information will be kept.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">2. Riders can ride solo or as part of a team. Teams can be one, two, three, four, or five riders.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">3. For team riders, a member must be on the trail at all times. Riders can split the number of laps up amongst themselves as they see fit.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">4. Each team or solo rider will need to keep track of their own laps.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">5. Riders are asked to bring a piece of bike swag for a blanket swap. Each swag is thrown on a blanket and after the teams complete the ride, they can choose a piece from the blanket. Some riders may be under 21, so no beer related swag.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">6. Trail opens at 7am and closes at 7pm. Lights will be needed for the last hour or so.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">7. Riders are not required to stay at the trail when team mates are on the ride. You are welcome to make a trip to QT for drinks and food.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">8. There is no cost for this ride. It is unsanctioned and unsponsered. It is a show and go. All riders accept responsibliity for themselves and their ride.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">9. A T Shirt will be made available. Pricing and design are in the works.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">10. Ride limited to 50 riders. Sign up via email at bikeidiot@cox.net. Put "M4 Ride" as your subject line. Please include your team name and team members with email address for all riders.

11. The ride is unsupported. I'll bring a floor pump but otherwise don't expect any mechanics or anything to be around.
We started at 7:07 am. Tim set up a heater and tent for riders to rest at. The Exchange and Pedaler both donated energy packs for riders to use.

The wind was strong and chilly with 30 mph sustained and 50 mph gusts.
The exposed areas are dry, but there are tacky areas under the trees. I couldn't get to the back fence line, but it usually holds water longer. After talking with Marty and looking at the weather, we are going to push the ride back to Thanksgiving day Sunday. It kills me since it is supposed to be 70 tomorrow (global warming, right Bobby?)

But the outlook for next Sunday is 52 degrees, so it will still be a great ride.
